this morning we woke up early and went to the late sheikh zayed’s mosque in abu dhabi. he’s buried there (creeeeppyyy) and it’s one of the biggest mosques in the world. it’s absolutely beautiful, there was so much detail in every square inch, everything was perfect. in case you didn’t know, Sheikh Zayed is the man who basically built the UAE. in a previous post, i stated that UAE is a young country, but i really meant it, it’s 37 years young! Zayed is the George Washington of the UAE, and he’s incredibly respected, even now that he’s dead. There’s portraits of him everywhere, and i mean everywhere. people rock his portrait on their cars, in their stores, on the highways, along the streets, and this is his grand mosque! holy shit, i have to hold some kind of respect for a guy who had this wonder built for him. this mosque holds the world’s largest carpet (lol, figures), and largest chandelier, which are all pictured above and in my flickr. there was still a lot of construction going on in and around the mosque (like everything else in this country) as it was only officially opened less than a year ago. seriously, an incredibly beautiful experience, i’m so glad i got to see it!
